What Educators Are Saying About Dr. Kimberly Varnado

I have had the privilege of working with Dr. Varnado in several professional settings, where she has the consummate ability to create a safe, welcoming environment where her colleagues contribute to the conversation. She is particularly skillful when the people in the group may be reticent to speak up. On a personal level, when I seek her counsel, she listens carefully to my needs, brings her insights into our conversation, and offers guidance that is unfailingly helpful.

As a new chair of a DPT program, it has been such a blessing to have Kim as a mentor that I can reach out to as I navigate the transition process from faculty to chair. She helped me realize the importance of staying calm and unshakeable in the midst of some very hostile situations. The message I gleaned from observing her and talking with her conveyed the importance of keeping my long-term goals in mind and remembering the greater mission to make a positive impact on society.

Dr. Varnado’s  guidance has been pivotal in building my foundation in values-based and inclusive leadership, which has been instrumental in my role as the Inaugural Associate Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at the WashU Medicine Program in Physical Therapy. Moreover, the opportunity to discuss my career goals and aspirations with her has allowed me to create a clear and actionable development plan, positioning me for continued success as I navigate opportunities and challenges throughout my career.

Since we met during our Fellowship training, Kim has been at the top of my ‘go-to’ list when I have sought advice and mentorship. With Kim, I know I have someone who will really listen, who can be trusted, and whose priority is helping me find a positive path forward that respects all who may be impacted by a decision.

I have been in a collegial mentorship group for leaders in academic physical therapy with Kim since 2018.  Throughout the years she has demonstrated the ability to dissect situations with clarity, ask probing questions to determine the root issues, and provided fresh perspectives on strategic management.  She is driven to seek excellence in everything she does, is curious about the world around her, and leads from a place of care and concern for every individual.
